Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a directory of IRS fax numbers by form and state?
Yes. Our IRS fax number directory at /irs-fax-directory/ lists the number for each form and state group, shows the official IRS page it was read from and the date it was checked, and marks which lines we have dialled to confirm a fax tone answers. It also flags 800-829-4933, which is widely shared as a fax number but answers as a voice line.
Does the IRS send a confirmation receipt when you fax them a form?
No. The IRS does not send an acknowledgement that a fax arrived. What you can get is proof of transmission from the sending side: FaxItOnce records whether the receiving fax machine accepted the pages and how many pages went through, and shows you that result. For Form 2553 the IRS sends a separate acknowledgment letter, typically around 60 days later.
Can I get an IRS tax transcript by fax?
No. The IRS stopped faxing tax transcripts on June 28, 2019, to taxpayers and to third parties including tax professionals, and on July 1, 2019 it removed the third-party mailing option from the Form 4506 series. The change was made because transcripts were being used for identity theft. Transcripts are now obtained through the IRS online account, by mail, or through the Income Verification Express Service for lenders. Does the IRS accept a Form 1040 income tax return by fax?
No. Standard income tax returns are not filed by fax. Faxing is used for specific administrative, election and authorization forms, for example SS-4, 2553, 2848 and 8821, and for correspondence the IRS has specifically asked you to fax. File a 1040 electronically or by mail.
How do I fax the IRS without a fax machine or landline?
You do not need either. Upload your completed form as a PDF, enter the IRS fax number for that form, and pay $2.75. The document is transmitted over the telephone network to the IRS fax line from our end, so nothing is required on yours beyond an internet connection.
What happens if I fax my documents to the wrong IRS number?
Nothing is returned to you and there is no recall. The IRS routes forms by type and often by state, so a form sent to the wrong unit may not be processed at all, and you will usually learn this only from the absence of a response. Confirm the number on the IRS Where to File page for your specific form before sending, then send again to the correct number.
Why does the IRS fax number I found not work?
Two common reasons. First, many published IRS numbers are voice lines rather than fax lines, so a fax attempt fails no matter how many times you retry. We have confirmed this by calling numbers customers tried, for example 800-829-4933, which answers as the IRS Business and Specialty Tax voice line. Second, IRS routing changes, so a number from an old article or PDF may be retired. Always check the current Where to File page for your form.
Can I fax Form SS-4 to the IRS?
Yes. The IRS accepts Form SS-4 (EIN Application) by fax at 855-641-6935. Processing takes about 4 business days by fax, compared to 4 weeks by mail. Upload your completed SS-4 as a PDF and send it with FaxItOnce for $2.75.
Can I fax Form 2553 to the IRS?
Yes. The IRS accepts Form 2553 (S-Corp Election) by fax. Use 855-887-7734 for eastern states or 855-214-7520 for western states. Acknowledgment takes about 60 days. FaxItOnce sends your form immediately for $2.75.
How do I find the right IRS fax number?
Use the IRS fax number directory on this page to find the correct number for your specific form. Different forms go to different fax numbers, and some forms have separate numbers for eastern and western states. Always verify on IRS.gov before sending.
Can I fax to the IRS from my phone?
Yes. FaxItOnce works on any device with a web browser, iPhone, Android, tablet, or computer. Upload your PDF, enter the IRS fax number, pay $2.75, and send. No app download required.
Do I get delivery confirmation?
Yes. FaxItOnce provides delivery confirmation via email when your fax is successfully transmitted to the IRS fax number. This confirms the fax was received by the IRS fax machine.
What format does the IRS accept for faxed documents?
The IRS accepts standard fax transmissions. With FaxItOnce, upload your form as a PDF and we convert it to fax format automatically. PDF is the recommended format for clarity and accuracy.
How long does the IRS take to process a faxed form?
Processing times vary by form. Form SS-4 (EIN) takes about 4 business days by fax vs. 4 weeks by mail. Form 2553 (S-Corp election) takes about 60 days for acknowledgment. Always check IRS.gov for current processing times.
Can I fax to the IRS from outside the United States?
Yes. FaxItOnce sends faxes to any US fax number, including IRS numbers, from anywhere in the world. You just need an internet connection.
Is it secure to fax tax documents online?
Yes. FaxItOnce uses encrypted connections to protect your documents during upload and transmission. Your files are automatically deleted from our servers after sending. Fax is also inherently more secure than email for sensitive tax documents.
How much does it cost to fax to the IRS?
FaxItOnce charges a flat $2.75 per fax to any IRS number, up to 45 pages. No per-page fees, no subscriptions. Compare that to $16.99/month for eFax or $1-$2.50 per page at a store.
What IRS forms can I fax?
You can fax any IRS form that the IRS accepts by fax, including SS-4, 2553, 2848, 8821, 4506-T, 7004, 14039, and more. Check the fax number directory on this page for specific numbers.
Do I need a cover sheet when faxing to the IRS?
The IRS does not require a cover sheet for most forms, but it is recommended. FaxItOnce includes a free professional cover sheet with every fax.
What if the IRS fax number is busy?
FaxItOnce automatically retries your fax up to 4 times if the line is busy. IRS fax lines can be busy during peak tax season, but our retry system handles this for you.
