How to Fax Your CP2000 Response to the IRS
A CP2000 is an IRS notice saying the income on your return does not match what employers, banks or brokers reported. You have 30 days from the date on the notice to respond, or 60 days if you live outside the United States. The IRS accepts your response by fax, by mail, or through its Document Upload Tool.
Where to fax it
Fax to the number printed at the top of your CP2000 notice. The IRS does not publish one number for all CP2000 responses, so use the one on your letter. If you cannot find it, call the phone number on the notice before sending.
What to send
The Response form from your notice, completed, signed and dated.
If you filed jointly, both spouses sign the Response form.
If you disagree, check the box on the Response form and include a signed statement explaining why.
Copies of any documents you want the IRS to consider, such as corrected 1099s or W-2s.
Your name, the last four digits of your SSN, and the notice number (CP2000) on every page you add.
Fax, mail or upload?
The Document Upload Tool is free and is linked from the IRS CP2000 page. Fax is the better choice when you have paper documents to send, cannot use the upload tool, or want a transmission record showing the date and time your response was received by the IRS fax line. Mail is slowest and gives you no proof unless you pay for certified mail.
How to fax it without a fax machine
- 1
Scan or photograph the signed Response form and your documents, and save them as one PDF.
- 2
Make a cover sheet with your name, the notice number, the tax year and the page count. Our free cover sheet generator does this.
- 3
Upload the PDF on FaxItOnce, enter the fax number from the top of your notice, and pay $2.75. One fax covers up to 45 pages.
- 4
Keep the delivery confirmation email. It shows the date, time and pages delivered.
If your response is longer than 45 pages
Split it into two faxes. Put a cover sheet on each one saying "Part 1 of 2" and "Part 2 of 2" with the notice number, and send them the same day.
After you send it
The IRS does not confirm receipt of a fax. Keep your delivery confirmation with your copy of the notice. If you do not respond by the date on the notice, the IRS sends a Statutory Notice of Deficiency, which starts a formal process. If the deadline is close, call the number on the notice.
