Is there one single IRS fax number?

No. The IRS has no central public fax number. Routing depends on the form you are filing and, for most forms, on the state of your principal business, office or residence. A number that is correct for Form 2553 is not correct for Form 2848 from the same state.

Do IRS fax numbers follow the Mississippi River?

That shorthand is close but wrong often enough to misroute a filing. The IRS itself describes the split as west of the Mississippi to Ogden and east to Memphis, with Louisiana, Arkansas and Wisconsin as stated exceptions. Wisconsin is the clearest example of why the shorthand fails: for Form 2553 it routes to Kansas City in the eastern group, while for Form 2848 it routes to Ogden in the western group. Use the state list for your specific form.

Why does an IRS number I found online not accept a fax?

Many widely published IRS numbers are voice lines, not fax lines. 800-829-4933 is a common example: it is the IRS Business and Specialty Tax line and answers with a recorded greeting, so a fax attempt fails no matter how many times it retries. IRS routing also changes without notice, so a number copied from an older article may be retired.

Does the IRS confirm that it received my fax?

No. The IRS does not acknowledge receipt of a fax. Your transmission confirmation from the sending side is the record to keep. Some forms produce a later response that is not a receipt: a faxed Form SS-4 returns the assigned EIN by fax in about four business days if you supplied a return fax number, and an accepted Form 2553 produces a CP261 notice by mail.
